Planet Chloé
For Chloé Soldevila, Planet Chloé feels less like starting over than finally seeing the whole picture. Stepping into Planet Chloé means stepping inside her imagination: a colourful, slightly surreal universe where music, fashion and image come together through an enduring sense of play.
After first making her name as the voice and songwriter behind psych-pop band Anemone, Soldevila returns to music with Planet Chloé, pushing her instinct for infectious melodies into new territory and blending hazy turn-of-the-millennium pop, trip-hop and alternative rock with traces of her psychedelic beginnings. It’s familiar but newly expansive: nostalgic, propulsive and unmistakably hers.
Soldevila’s creative instincts have never belonged to a single medium. Born in Québec City and raised in Montréal by a Canadian mother and Spanish father, Soldevila grew up immersed in music, performance and making things by hand. She studied classical piano from the age of five, sang in classical choirs and spent much of her childhood doing dance and theatre. As a teenager, she moved into jazz piano, and at 18 joined her first band as the keyboardist of a krautrock project. That same year, she got her first film camera and began documenting her life and the people around her: the beginning of a visual practice that would become inseparable from her music. She later studied film, photography and ceramics at university, while maintaining a lifelong fascination with fashion and textiles.
Music eventually took centre stage. In 2016, Soldevila begins writing her own songs and founds the band Anemone. In 2017, Anemone released the EP Baby Only You & I, followed by debut album Beat My Distance through Luminelle Recordings and Royal Mountain Records. The band toured extensively across North America and Europe, appearing atfestivals such as Osheaga, Pitchfork Music Festival, La Villette Sonique and SXSW, and sharing stages with artists including Stereolab, Men I Trust and Pond. Exclaim! called Anemone “Montréal’s Best New Psych Band.” In 2019, Anemone’s “She’s The One” was named a finalist for the SOCAN Songwriting Prize. Beyond songwriting and performing, Soldevila shaped the visual world around Anemone, directing nearly all of the band’s music videos and leading its creative direction.
Following years devoted to Anemone, Soldevila moved to Berlin, where making music took a back seat for the first time. She immersed herself in fashion, textiles and image-making, documenting and sharing her creative life online. Berlin’s electronic music scene (and learning to DJ) expanded the palette of sounds she would eventually bring back to her own work. Slowly, the desire to return to music took shape, this time with a vision expansive enough to hold all sides of her creativity, without compromise.
Planet Chloé grew out of that desire, not as a reinvention, but as a way of bringing the whole picture into focus. At its heart is a kind of nostalgic optimism: a belief in following curiosity, taking pleasure seriously and making things simply because they make life feel more exciting. Romantic, mischievous and a little surreal, Planet Chloé lives with one foot in a childhood daydream and the other firmly in the present, built around a simple hope that the joy Soldevila finds in making things might be contagious.
